Chapter Nine

“That was Kevin the Teddy Bear?” Blu grumbled as they walked away from the front desk at MacBain International, which took up the entire fifth floor of the impressive Riley House building at the edge of Edinburgh’s business district. “You do realize that guy is built like a bloody rugby forward, right?”

“Doesn’t mean he isn’t a teddy bear,” Kaia drawled, relieved to finally be in the heavily secured building, given how anxious she’d been as they’d walked from the place where Blu had parked his impressive Range Rover, the streets in this part of the city always heaving on a workday. She knew it was silly, given that she had one of the most powerful Warlocks in the country at her side—but despite the arguments she kept throwing in his face over the threat of a Gan Bhrí coming after her, she couldn’t deny that she was rattled.

“You can wait in one of the chairs over there,” she told Blu, gesturing toward the small waiting area that was situated just outside of Callum’s office, her own office a bit further down the hall. “I won’t be long.”

He cast an uneasy glance at the two women walking down the hallway toward them, his normally golden skin looking a little green, and shook his head. “Nae. I’m going in with you.”

“You’ll wait here,” she quietly argued, pointing at one of the chairs, “or I’m putting an end to this ridiculous bodyguard thing you’ve got going so fast it’ll make your dick spin.”

Despite his tension, the corner of his beautiful mouth twitched with a smile. “It’s head, honey. Head spin.”

“Not if I smack you in the dick, it isn’t.”

His blue eyes went wide, and he actually took a step back from her. “Christ, you’re an evil little thing, aren’t you?”

“Trust me, buddy, you have no idea.” Kaia had asked him about the specifics of his curse as they’d driven over, and hadn’t been able to hold back her laughter when he’d explained about the beef vegetable soup. “And if the smell gets too bad, just hold your nose,” she told him, reaching up and tapping the tip of it.

“Like I said, evil,” he muttered, dropping down into one of the chairs, his tall, powerful body making the sturdy piece of furniture look flimsy and small.

“I promise I won’t be long,” she told him, then forced herself to turn away and knock on Callum’s door.

“Come in,” he called out.

She opened the door, a smile on her lips as she said, “Good morning.”

“Did I hear Blu McKendrick’s voice?” the lion-shifter asked in a husky rumble, his tawny brows knitted with an unmistakable look of concern after she’d shut the office door behind her and crossed the room to stand in front of his massive desk.

“Um, yeah,” she murmured, mortified that she could feel herself blushing under Callum’s concerned stare. “He’s kind of acting as my shadow at the moment.”

His frown deepened. “What’s going on?”

Smoothing the skirt of the beautiful gray dress that she’d borrowed from Ivy, she said, “It’s, um, just a family thing.
